the World
Microsoft launched Microsoft 365 Copilot in early 2023 with powerful new AI features for applications like Word, Outlook and Teams that millions of people use every day. What does this all mean for the world of work and how will artificial intelligence change the way we work? Recently, Microsoft published new information from its “2023 Work Trend Index” 📈 report entitled “Will AI fix work?”. What are three key findings from it?
Artificial Intelligence: new Opportunities for Creativity and Productivity
The report shows that the pace of work has accelerated so much that people cannot keep up with it. This means that the ability to create innovations is also suffering. Next-generation artificial intelligence can reduce the workload and [companies that embrace AI] will have new opportunities to increase their creativity and productivity. “This new generation of AI will remove the drudgery of work and unleash creativity,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
Microsoft Report: three Key Findings on the Importance of AI for Businesses
The Microsoft report contains three key insights for managers who want to understand the importance of AI and use it responsibly for their organization.
Insight 1: Digital Debt costs Innovation
The amount of data, emails and chats exceeds the ability to process them, according to the report. In the time you spend dealing with this “digital debt”, you cannot devote yourself to creative work. As a result, 64 percent of employees would not have enough time and energy to complete their work. And these employees would be 3.5 times more likely to struggle to innovate or think strategically.
The term “digital debt” refers to the idea that the use of digital technologies, especially in companies, can lead to long-term obligations or challenges that need to be overcome. These obligations can come in different forms.
Data debt, for example, means that poor data quality, lack of data strategies or inefficient data management can make it difficult for organizations to gain valuable insights from their data.
It is advisable to actively manage these debts and allocate resources to reduce or eliminate them to avoid long-term problems.
Insight 2: There is a new Alliance between AI and Employees
The report states that for employees, the prospect of relief outweighs the fear of losing their job. Manager want to support their employees with AI, not replace them, but 94 percent of people feared that AI would replace their jobs. However, 70 percent would delegate as much work as possible to AI to reduce their workload. Managers were twice as likely to say that AI would be most valuable if it increased productivity rather than reducing the number of employees.
Insight 3: Employees need AI Skills
Employees will need new core skills, such as prompt engineering, according to the “2023 Work Trend Index”. 82 percent of managers expected their employees to need new skills. The number of posts on LinkedIn in the US mentioning GPT had increased by 79 percent. These new, in-demand and AI-centric skills would have an impact on everything from resumes to job postings.

Microsoft’s Conclusion: will AI fix Work?
“The pace and volume of work have increased exponentially and are outpacing humans’ ability to keep up,” commented Microsoft’s Jared Spataro. “In a world where creativity is the new productivity, digital debt is more than an inconvenience - it’s a threat to innovation. Next-generation AI will lift the weight of work and free us all to focus on the work that matters.”
