Dynamics NAV: Change the
Work
Date

In Dynamics NAV, the current date is used when creating documents, among other things. However, there are two different dates for determining the current date: the actual current date and the work date. The difference: the work date can be changed at any time in Dynamics NAV. We will go into more detail on whether and when it makes sense to make such a change.

Changing the Work Date in the Role Tailored Client (RTC)

Before we go into detail, we will first show you how to change the work date by clicking on the current work date in the lower left margin of the main window of Dynamics NAV.

Role Tailored Client - Work Date

A window opens in which you can change the work date.

Changing the Work Date in the Web Client

In the web client, the work date can be changed on the My Settings page. To do this, you must call up the settings overview in the top right margin.

Web Client - My Settings

The work date can now be changed in the following view.

Web Client - Work Date

Work Date Shortcut

In all date fields in Microsoft Dynamics NAV, it is possible to enter an “H” instead of the date. The system date is then entered in the field. If you enter “A” in a date field, the work date is automatically inserted.

Work Date Shortcut

You only need to confirm the entry and the current work date will be entered in the date field.

The Work Date in Practice

If the work date has been changed, you can create documents such as quotes, sales orders, purchase orders and invoices which adopt the specified work date directly as the posting and order date. It is not necessary to edit them afterwards.

Work Date - Sales Order - Posting Date - Order Date

This is particularly helpful in practice, for example, if all employee timesheets for services from the previous month only need to be written and posted in the new month. This allows the date to be set in advance for the previous month.

Recurring postings can be carried out early by changing the work date. In a Recurring General Journal, a posting can only be made if the work date is greater than or equal to the posting date of that in the journal line.

If interest for a month is to be posted on the 25th on the 31st, the work date must be set to the 31st. Otherwise an error message would appear that there is nothing to post.

Interest - Error Message: there is nothing to post.

Therefore, a posting can be made before the 31st by changing the work date.
