Continuous Innovation and many New Features Microsoft increases
Prices
for Power BI
as of
April 1, 2020

Microsoft has announced a price adjustment for Power BI, effective as of April 1, 2025. The changes affect both Power BI Pro and Power BI Premium-per-User (PPU) and mark the first global price increase in almost a decade. Why is Microsoft making the price change now and which customers should prepare for new prices? 💰

The first Global Price Adjustment since the Launch of Power BI in 2015

In 2023, Power BI prices have already been adjusted in some markets, including Germany: the price for the Pro license increased from €8.40 to €9.40 per user per month. However, these adjustments were officially communicated by Microsoft as a reaction to exchange rate fluctuations. The change now announced for 2025, on the other hand, represents the first worldwide uniform increase officially declared as a “price adjustment”.

Power BI Pro and Premium-per-User are affected: the New Prices for Power BI from April 2025

From April 2025, the costs for the popular BI tool will increase as follows:

Other licensing models such as Power BI Embedded, Power BI Report Server or capacity-based Premium licenses remain unchanged for the time being.

Why is Microsoft implementing the Price Adjustment?

Microsoft justifies the price increase with increased investments in the further development of Power BI. The tool has been expanded with numerous functions, including:

  • AI-supported analyses such as the Power BI Copilot
  • Improved data visualizations
  • Deeper integration with other Microsoft services such as Azure and Microsoft 365

These investments increase the scalability and benefits of the platform and underline its role as a leading tool for data-driven decisions.

Who is affected by the Price Change?

All commercial customers are affected by the adjustment, regardless of whether they have new or existing licenses. However, there are differences in the implementation:

Existing Enterprise Agreement (EA) Customers

Customers with EA licenses will retain their current prices until their current contract expires. The new price will not take effect until the next contract renewal. This means that these customers can continue to use the previous conditions for the duration of their current agreement.

New Customers without a Long-term Price Commitment

All new customers who purchase Power BI licenses after April 1, 2025 will automatically pay the new prices. This also applies to existing customers without a price commitment, e.g. with monthly or flexible subscriptions.

Customers with Microsoft 365 E5 or Office 365 E5 Packages

Users who use Power BI as a component of one of these packages are excluded from the price increase, as the prices of these packages remain unchanged.

Customers from the Non-profit or Charity Sector

These customers are currently excluded from the changes.

Despite Price Adjustment: Power BI remains Leading BI Solution

The price adjustment underlines the strategic importance that Microsoft attaches to Power BI. Despite the increase, Power BI remains a leading solution in the field business intelligence, which convinces through continuous innovation and strong integration.
